LARKIN GRIMM
SATURDAY
Artist/Musician/Activist
Larkin Grimm (they/them) was born in a hippie commune in Memphis, Tennessee and raised in the Appalachian Mountains in a family of musicians. Larkin's father, John Grimm, is an award winning banjo player in Georgia, known for his clawhammer style as well as his psychedelic banjo ragas. Larkin is a queer, nonbinary performer who is well versed in Appalachian, Irish, and Bulgarian folk music and writes in a unique style influenced by psychedelia, world music, free jazz, and New York City downtown scenesters Laurie Anderson, Lou Reed, David Bowie, and Yoko Ono. Larkin sang and played bass in the band Dirty Projectors while studying scuplture at Yale, played with noise bands while living in an arts collective in Providence, Rhode Island, and then moved to NYC and took part in the Anti-Folk scene while working at the legendary Sidewalk Cafe.
Larkin is a vivid storyteller and wild, electric performer whose music is hard to categorize because each song takes on the form of a unique soundtrack to the story it tells. Their recordings have been praised by The New York Times, The Village Voice, and The Guardian. Most recently, Larkin collaborated with Belgian pop star Stromae on their Tiny Desk performance and Larkin is currently working on a Bulgarian Village Music project for The Library of Congress with Bulgarian diva Vlada Tomova and her choir Yasna Voices.
